The
organisation of the treatment will depend on local
facilities as well as on personal considerations of
the medical attendants concerned. At
the Orthopedic University-Clinic in Malmö,
where the von Rosen-Splint has been used since
1956, the following information, and instructions,
are given to the mother at her first visit to the
clinic, usually three to four days after
delivery: Your
baby's hip joints are somewhat unstable. This means
the baby's legs should be kept in a special
position up to 2 - 3 months of age; if not, severe
troubles may occur in the future. Handled in the
right way the hip joints will develop
normally. The
von Rosen-splint will usually not be of any trouble
to the baby. A slight irritation of the skin may
sometimes occur, especially if the skin is damp or
soiled by layers of powder or dirt. Fever and
diarrhoea will increase the risk of skin
irritation. Once
a week the baby has to be removed from the splint
and bathed by special personnel at the Orthopedic
Outdoor-Department. The baby will be checked by a
doctor at the age of 1 month. The hip joints should
be X-rayed at the age of 3 months and also when the
child has started to walk, at the latest at
1.5
years of age. 1.
Do not remove the splint from the baby. 2.
Do not pull or lift the baby by the legs or the
feet. 3.
Keep your hand under the bottom when lifting the
baby from the bed. 4.
The pillow should not be more than 2 cm
thick. 5.
Turn the baby now and then into the prone
position. 6.
Keep the baby clean by using water and unscented
baby-soap; dry the skin carefully and powder
lightly with unperfumed baby-powder. 7.
Do not use salve and scented oil. 8.
Change diaper frequently. 9.
Prevent the baby from sweating by cautious
dressing. 10.
Do not dress the baby in too tight
trousers. 11.
Contact the Orthopedic Outdoor-Department if any
skin trouble should come about. |
